RAY VAUGHN UPPED THE GOLDEN GUN ON JOEY
Ray Vaughn - Golden Eye (prod. by J White Did It)
It hasn’t even been a week. Ray let Joey breathe for a grand total of 6 days before dropping more bars on his head. To make matters worse, this comes ONE HOUR after Joey Bada$$ released “My Town", his response to Hoe Era. A legendary play taken straight from his TDE predecessor Kendrick Lamar during last year’s Drake feud. If this was a movie sequel, the commercial would say “But this time…. it’s personal.” Ray strategically chose to jump from a catchy west coast banger, to something that hits closer to home for the east coast fans. Ditching the catchy flows and radio friendly beat of Hoe Era, for an all too familiar sinister sample from 50 cent’s “Back Down” off the classic Get Rich or Die Tryin Album.
Gone are the bars about Red Bull and funny nicknames. Instead Ray goes straight for the jugular bringing up Joey’s connections and affinity for Diddy amidst the current ongoing trial. Ray glides over multiple beat switches, while rapping about Bada$$ gliding over… less desirable things with his Bad Boy buddies. It goes without saying that Ray Vaughn is very clearly, declaring a full out war against Joey. Which is completely contrary to the friendly competition Joey made it seem like in last week’s freestyle with Big Sean and Ab-Soul.
“ Them gay lines is out of pocket
I ain't never been to Diddy house
Serayah gon' be shocked
when all that footage out
Couldn't get a Grammy and said,
"Fuck it nigga,
put me on that castin' couch"
That's the type of dick-lickin' shit
you should be rappin' 'bout ”
But it wouldn’t be Ray if he didn’t drop something witty and funny along the way:
“ 40 pokin' out like
pegs on a mongoose
I can handlebars
You been rappin' 20 years straight
you work for Santa Claus ”
Yeah, it’s gonna be a long night for Joey. But one thing is for sure, real fans of rap are eating well. This back and forth is great for hip-hop and bringing both camps a lot of much-deserved attention. And neither side is backing down. But while you wait for the next response (I’m guessing 2 days from now at this rate), take a listen to Ray Vaughn’s debut TDE project/mixtape that released late last month, “The Good, The Bad, The Dollar Menu.” You can find that album and it’s respective review here.
